Sphynx Cat

By Anne Eley-Middleton

With a thin hard tail that looks like it’s ready to be threaded into the eye of a needle, with big eyes, and ears like humongous antennas, the so-called hairless “Sphynx” is actually quite cut! The Sphynx is a champion in purring, and when posing it likes to lift one foreleg.

This adorable cat, of an unknown father, was an out of the ordinary mutation of a litter of black and white kitties, which were born in Ontario, Canada in 1966. However, historical writings also tell us of a hairless cat breed that existed during the reign of the Mexican Aztecs. It was said to have grown a peach-fuzz hair coat in the colder winter months. Today’s breed with a short hair down-like coat is noticed throughout the year, but only seen with difficulty.

However there is no sense to talk about its eyebrows, or measuring the whiskers with that ruler, because there are no eyebrows, nor whiskers on this kitty. Where a Sphynx’s coat regulates its physical temperature with its just-about invisible fur, this cat tends to sweat, and feels warm when touched, causing it to dislike being petted or cuddled. Weather changes are especially harsh on this feline with limited skin protection. Not accepted by all cat-lovers, in America it is only recognized by the International Cat Association.

Sadly, the Canadian withdrew its recognition of the past, however France and the Netherlands adore the Sphynx! It may seem, that this cat was dropped off by space-invaders, but despite the hurly-burly of human decision making, the Sphynx is produced through the evolution of earth, and therefore fancy enough to be recognized and respected as the “World’s Most Unusual Cat”!
